Hot Toys MMS588 Lando Calrissian

Any day that Hot Toys releases an original trilogy Star Wars figure is a good day for me! It's great that with this release, Hot Toys has tackled a character that hasn't been done for years in this scale, and is a massive improvement of course from the old Sideshow Lando figure.

Click the link below to watch my video review over on the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel. Hope you can subscribe too and stay tuned for upcoming reviews!

The set doesn't come with too much, but I guess there really isn't all that much to include from The Empire Strikes Back for Lando Calrissian. What has been included is all nicely done to do a great job for essentially a pretty simple figure.

The cardboard Cloud City backdrop is a little tacky though, and the way the flaps fold and connect is not very secure. But at least the weapons, communicator devices, and swap out hands are all well done. The cape is a nice felt material with some good stitching, although it is a pain to attach to the figure and look natural (more on that later).

The figure itself has a fantastic head sculpt. The slight smile is OK, but I actually would've preferred some sort of cheeky smirk. Either way, it has the typical Hot Toys realistic skin tone and fine texturing in the hair. The figure's outfit is beautifully tailored, and my favourite part of the figure. The shirt is a similar material to the cape, and is tucked in nicely and moves/folds in very realistic ways.

The pants are also well tailored, fitting well over the padded body. The belt looks a little plasticky, but from normal viewing distances is OK. The boots are the typical pleather material used for previous Star Wars figures, and still look nice with the outfit.

As mentioned earlier, the cape is a pain to put on the figure. It has movie-accurate straps that go over the shoulders and under the armpits. Just be careful in pulling on the elastic straps to make sure the collar can fit snugly around the neck. There is a small wire in the collar to bend it around the neck once you have the cape oriented the right way.

Eventually you can get it to sit quite naturally. It does tend to balloon out at the rear, but that's mostly hidden on display so just try to make the folds look natural from the front. The gold inner lining is a nice contrast to the baby blue material of the outer cape and shirt. I actually used a light iron to get out some wrinkles out of the box. Using a bit of water spray and the iron helped to tame it a bit.

Once set up, the figure does have a lot of shelf presence, and looks fantastic for such a simple figure. Together with the rest of the Empire Strikes Back rebels, the glaring omission of a Han Solo from the movie is readily apparent. All figures that Hot Toys have released from Episode 5 have been fantastic figures.

I really do hope that Hot Toys announce more Han Solo figures soon, as I would love to have a variant from Empire Strikes Back as well as his Endor outfit from Return of the Jedi. Here's hoping 2022 brings some good news for Star Wars collectors!

Hot Toys MMS429 Luke Skywalker (Jedi Luke)

I think Hot Toys released the Jedi Luke figure back in June or July 2018, but the Australian distributor didn't get stock until December for some reason. So it was a long wait, but definitely one worth waiting for if you're a Star Wars original trilogy fan.

Packaging is the standard Hot Toys Star Wars design, with some decent pics of the prototype figure on the front and inside cardboard insert. The range of accessories is actually decent for this release, with the Jedi cloak and Death Star base being a couple of standouts that are not included in the Deluxe version to be released next year.

The Jedi robe is a nice soft material similar to that of the Anakin Skywalker figure. The swap out lightup lightsaber arm by all accounts is a bitch to put on, so I didn't even bother trying. It's a shame HT didn't include a separate lightsaber gloved hand to all the non-lightup lightsaber.

The lightsaber hilts themselves are nicely painted as always. I'm not sure how accurate it is to the movie, but I'm not that big a stickler for those minute details in accessories. There's a range of hands for various poses and to hold the blaster. There are two swap out base covers too, with the sands of Tatooine and the floor grate of Jabba's palace being the options depending on the accessories you use with the figure.

The head sculpt is always a focal point, with many not liking the slightly open mouth. I actually don't mind it too much, since Luke did spend a lot of time in the movie with his mouth slightly open! What I think draws attention is the slightly elongated mouth area that gives him a bit of a fish look. The prototype didn't seem to protrude so much, but overall I think it's decent.

The figure does have a fat suit underneath the black outfit. This helps to pad out the joints, but does hinder the articulation. This lack of articulation is mostly in the torso rotation and ab crunch areas, which are really needed to get him into that iconic pose on Jabba's skiff. I did the best I could because I really couldn't be bothered taking off all the clothes and removing the fat suit.

With the black Jedi tunic on over the core black outfit, the fat suit is not very noticeable. I prefer this look which is the way he looked on Jabba's skiff. The belt over the top of the tunic belt was only ever seen briefly in the movie when he spoke to Leia on Endor I think. So I'll stick with just the tunic only.

Posed up he looks quite nice. What's lacking of course is the windswept hair to match that scene, and HT have deliberately included that only in the Deluxe version to be released next year. Luckily that comes with another head sculpt and his Endor outfit, so I'll be using the windswept hair with this sculpt and the other one can wear the helmet that he wore on the Speeder Bike.

The boots are really nicely done, and it's great that HT have fixed the ankle areas so that they don't collapse like they did on the first few figures like ANH Han Solo. The range of motion is good too, so you can have his feet flat on the more dynamic poses.

The tailoring and fit of the core black outfit is pretty nice, and the magetic flap to fold down the top right corner for the Death Star duel is a nice touch. The pants can get a bit tight around the groin area, so I tried to lower the top of the pants and raise the parts tucked into the boots to give it a bit more flexibility. Overall I think he poses quite nicely with the lightsaber.

This Jedi Luke is another nice addition to the original Star Wars collection from Hot Toys. Side by side with the other Luke releases, this new figure fits in perfectly. I actually think the new head sculpt is perhaps the most movie accurate of the three. A lot of collectors seem to like the DX07 Bespin Luke, but I don't particularly think the likeness is that good. The three outfits below are my favourite for Luke, and Hot Toys has definitely done them justice.

Hot Toys MMS423 Princess Leia (Hoth outfit)

There's never been just one iconic costume for Princess Leia, and her style from Hoth is as memorable as any of her other outfits. This new release from Hot Toys does it justice, just as their first figure with her classic Death Star costume.

Packaging style is what we've come to expect for Star Wars related figures, so nothing too special to write home about. The cardboard insert looks nice, but Hot Toys continues their trend of using inaccurate photos for their figures (eg. they used the Death Star 2 in the background which was not in The Empire Strikes Back!)

She doesn't come with too many accessories, but what she does come with is nicely detailed. I won't bother using the breathing apparatus or welding goggles. But the blaster is nicely painted in glossy black with the silver tip, and she looks great holding it.

The costume is nicely tailored, with great stitch and patch work throughout. Early reports had people receiving figures with strange coloured dots near the areas of patchwork. Apparently this is ink to guide the factory workers and sewers, but luckily mine was fine.

My first figure arrived with a broken arm and Sideshow sent me a replacement body. It was an absolute pain the arse to push the pants of the new body in the boots. I had to use quite a bit of force and one of the little tools Hot Toys gives with their Iron Man figures. That was the only way to push the pant material into the boots without them looking too bunched. I would not recommending taking those boots off for any reason!

The boots are a nice fake leather type material, with good ankle articulation. The overall body articulation is also decent, but the suit does restrict it a little. But you can still get her into a decent pose to try and replicate her attitude.

The head sculpt has a slight difference to the prototype. I do think the head sculpt is good, but could have been better. From some angles it looks perfect, but from others it looks too thin in the cheeks. Still, it's instantly recognisable and on par with their ANH Leia figure.

Overall, it's awesome that we're getting more original trilogy figures from Hot Toys. I really hope they do a Han Solo and Lando Calrissian from Empire one day! If you're a fan of Star Wars, I'd jump on board and grab this figure while you can!

Hot Toys VGM24 Snowtrooper Deluxe

I wasn't planning on getting a Hot Toys Snowtrooper since I already had the old Sideshow version, but the local Aussie Christmas sales were actually pretty damn good this year! Unfortunately I missed out on even bigger discounts after Christmas on this figure, but overall I'm pretty happy with the purchase.

Click the link below to check out my full video review over on the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel!

This Deluxe set certainly comes with a lot of accessories, with additional features from the Battlefront game. I'll be sticking with the core accessories from the movie though, but options are always good.

The improvement over the previous Sideshow version is immediately obvious. The helmet and veil is a massive improvement in terms of movie accuracy. The visor is much better, and the thin veil material moves and changes with different orientation of the helmet.

The underlying body is also a big improvement, with articulation that is far superior to the Sideshow figure. There are still aspects of the Sideshow figure I like, such as the pants and kama material. If I can find a cheap Hot Toys helmet, I might keep the Sideshow figure and just replace the helmet!

Overall, if you're a fan of The Empire Strikes Back, you'll be very happy with this Snowtrooper figure!

Hot Toys MMS369 Yoda

Seems like a long wait to finally get a great original trilogy Yoda, and that's what Hot Toys have given us with this new version. Two great head sculpts and diorama make for a great way to display the little Jedi Master!

Click through below to check out my full review on the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel :)

Box art is the same style as always, but it's interesting that the inside insert art shows the prototype with just sculpted hair. They added a bit of fluffy hair in final production by gluing it to the sculpt rather than rooting the hair. But it still gives a decent effect that adds to the realism.

Comes with a decent array of accessories to justify the high price point. The light up feature is a nice-to-have, but not something I'll use at all on display. The diorama base with tree give a nice little environment for the figure to rest on.

It's a definite improvement over the previous Sideshow version, especially in the head sculpt accuracy. I particularly like the closed-eye sculpt from the scene where he lifts the X-wing out of the swamp. It's perfect for that Jedi concentration look on display, and that's the way I'll leave it! If you're an Empire Strikes Back fan, this is the 1/6th scale Yoda for you!

Lego 75060 Ultimate Collector Series Slave 1

I was lucky enough to find the new Lego UCS Slave 1 available on the official Lego store for the Australian region, so I ordered it straight away! And what an incredible set it is. It looks beautiful from pretty much every angle, and it was a fun build to do with my kids too.

Here are some pics of the sequential components individually bagged.

Bag #1

Bag #2

Bag #3
Love the way they layered the curved structure of this side of the spacecraft.

Bag #4
Great use of some unique curved components to render this top part of the spacecraft. The stickers here also caused me a bit of anxiety, but overall I managed to get them on fairly straight and even. I wish they would have just printed the markings though....

Bag #5
Connecting the front and rear sections of the spacecraft. Some great engineering in the lattice work internal to the spacecraft.

Bag #5
Even the underside of this component was given a lot of detail, despite it probably not being shown in most displays. Really nice attention to detail by Lego here.

Bag #6
More nice engineering touches in beginning the structural part of the spacecraft's internal design. Love the Han in Carbonite mini-figure too :)

Bag #7
Added the wings in this section, and I was a little concerned that they were flimsy. But I needn't have worried, because Bag #9 below fixed all that :)

The stickers on the wings gave me the most trouble, and I had to carefully remove one so that I could straighten up the lines to match the stickers next to it. In the end, not totally perfect, but good enough!

Also includes new printing for the Boba Fett mini-fig. Love the fabric cape too :)

Bag #8
Starting the build around the cockpit area, including the awesome flight seat that rotates and rocks beautifully to position the pilot in both landed and flight modes.

Bag #9
I mentioned above that in the previous steps I was worried the wings felt a little fragile. But this section totally fixed that with an ingenious way to attach the wing to the chassis of the spacecraft. The wings connect all the way through to each other to rotate synchronously, and are held in place very sturdily with the nicely engineering truss to the body.

Bag #10
Some beautifully engineering lattice work here to complete the structural integrity of the back section of the spacecraft. The designer indicated that the model used in the movie was almost like an eggshell, so they had to design some way of holding the structure securely. They did an outstanding job with strategically placed pins and connection points that really made the iconic shape of the spacecraft hold together very well.

Bag #10
Here's the view of this component from the other side. Love the uniquely made curved dome for the cockpit, which is a removeable piece to allow easy access to place Boba in the seat. Just looks amazing from this view!

Bag #11
Some great engineering again to complete the panelling for this side of the spacecraft. Finishes it off beautifully.

Bag #12
And then the slightly different patterns on this panel is done, along with the gun turrets at the bottom. And amazing build of a truly iconic spacecraft.

Bag #13
Befitting a model of this detail, the stand is also an engineering marvel to build! It holds the model perfectly in flight mode, and is very sturdy. Looks fantastic too :)

And here's my full video review showing off the completed model and some of its features. Hope you can check it out, subscribe, like, and comment with your thoughts on this amazing piece by Lego!

If you're thinking of getting this, I would definitely hurry before it sells out and starts going for crazy money on the aftermarket! It's a great display piece and worthy of any Star Wars collection!

Sideshow Collectibles Darth Vader Deluxe exclusive version

Darth Vader is undoubtedly one of the most iconic villains in cinematic history. His entrance during the opening scene of Star Wars was pretty much his entrance into the subconscious of millions of fans around the world, where the sight and sound of him would be forever ingrained into our pop culture hungry brains.

No Star Wars collection is complete without a Darth Vader collectible of some sort. The character has been released so many times in so many forms, it's almost a given that a fan would have some incarnation already. Sideshow Collectibles had already released a 1/6th scale Vader figure a few years ago, which still holds up very well today. But times and toy technology move on, and it was time for Sideshow to up the ante again in the 1/6th scale arena. And if there was ever a Darth Vader collectible that is a must-have in any Star Wars collection, it is this new Darth Vader Deluxe package.

In this scale, Sideshow (and everyone else for that matter) have been in the shadow of Hot Toys in recent years. But with this new figure, Sideshow have shown that they can at least improve and keep up with the best in the business. The figure certainly doesn't match the amazing quality of the best from Hot Toys, but it's pretty damn close.

PACKAGING:
For this figure, the packaging is definitely one way in which Sideshow have tried to match the look, feel, and quality of Hot Toys. This is definitely the biggest box of any Sideshow figure I own, and it's needed to hold the numerous accessories. The outer cover has a nice matte black finish, embossed with the outline of Vader's iconic visage.

The back of the box has a great shot of the figure in his well-known "look into the distance" pose. It's shown with the Death Star window background, which would have been an incredible accessory to have, but unfortunately a backdrop diorama was not included.

Upon opening the shoe box styled package, there is another piece of great artwork on the cardboard insert, this time showcasing the alternate headsculpt accessories. This again is very much like how Hot Toys present their figures in the packaging, so it's definitely obvious Sideshow are following their lead.

ACCESSORIES:
Once you take everything out of the box, it's obvious this release is very deserving of the "Deluxe" moniker. The package is absolutely filled to the brim with accessories. The set comes with two stands that include red LED lightup features which give a nice red glow when turned on. One stand is the larger main stand for the figure itself, and the other a smaller stand on which to display the separate pieces of his helmet.

It should be noted that the separate head piece doesn't have to be used on the stand, and can be used when posing the figure with the unmasked headsculpt. The main mouth and face section of the separate helmet piece is very nicely detailed and painted. The unmasked headsculpt itself doesn't really seem to be an accurate representation of Sebastian Shaw from Return of the Jedi, but I'm not sure if that was the intent. It looks as though Sideshow tried to make the sculpt a combination of both Shaw and what an older Hayden Christensen might look like. Either way, it's done quite nicely, although the paint application is not of the lofty Hot Toys standard.

The figure also comes of course with Vader's lightsaber, both in the lit and unlit versions. Note that there is no actual light up feature in the saber, which is something I prefer as it's one less tiny electronic feature that can go wrong. Hot Toys went that route as well with the DX07 Luke Skywalker figure, and I think Sideshow made the right decision to follow suit here.

And then we get to the hands! There are more swap out hands here than most figures I've seen. From finger pointing, to hand waving, to fist pumping, to force chocking, whatever hand you could want is here! You'll have plenty of fun trying them out and thinking which scene from the movies to pose him in. The best thing about the hands is that Sideshow have included wrist pegs in each one, which is a huge bonus. A major gripe with Hot Toys figures is that each hand sculpt does not include a wrist peg, so you have to be extremely careful not to break the delicate wrist pegs. Spares are given, but it's nothing compared to having them inbuilt into each hand as they are here, so huge kudos to Sideshow for including that!

Note that for the Sideshow Exclusive version, the extra accessories included are the severed arm and hand from the final duel in Return of the Jedi. It's a nice touch, but probably not the best exclusive accessory they've done.

FIGURE:
Sideshow's first Vader figure from a few years ago apparently had issues with it being too tall, and the fandom weren't too impressed with supposed inaccuracies with the helmet. I love Star Wars, but not to the extent where I'll pour over the minute details on a 1/6th scale figure. With this new Vader, I'm pretty sure most collectors will be extremely impressed when its taken out of the box!

The body this time is slightly smaller than the previous Vader, correcting the height issue somewhat, but he still towers over most other figures such as the Hot Toys DX07 Luke or Sideshow's own Boba Fett figure. That to me is perfectly fine, and he certainly doesn't look oversized on display.

The helmet is a great representation of his iconic look, and the black shiny dome looks pretty great to me (despite some QC issues that I mention later in the review).  The cape and inner skirt are the other stand out feature, and are made of an extremely fine and delicate material. This allows the cape to perfectly drape over the shoulders, but still be able to be placed in strategic positions. It's so fine and soft in fact that I'd probably warn of making sure your fingernails are trimmed in case it catches on anything and you tear it.

The body suit itself is a nice leather-like material which covers the arms, body, and legs. The only issue is that it tends to bunch up around the crotch area, causing some unfortunate creases which can't really be straightened out. The suit around the legs tuck into the boots, which effectively push the suit back up into the crotch, so there's not much that can be done about it. But with a bit of futzing and creative posing or draping of the cape, it still looks perfectly fine.

The shoulder armour is nicely done, but is a little delicate so be careful where you press when swapping out the head. Articulation is pretty good, and isn't too hindered by the outfit apart from the ankles which don't really have much movement at all due to the hard boots. But apart from that, you can definitely get him into some decent dynamic poses.

The last major feature of the figure are the lightup features of the chest plate and belt. Out of the box, you'll need to use a screw driver to undo the battery compartments and pull out some plastic to allow the batteries to contact their electronics. The screws are rather tight, so this part of the unboxing can be rather frustrating, but go slow and carefully and you should be OK. Once done, the lights flash quite nicely and add another level of realism to the figure.

Swapping out the hands to get the pose you want is fairly straightforward. Straight out of the box you'll probably have to futz around with the chest plate, belt, inner skirt etc just to make him look as movie accurate and cool as he can be. But once all setup, he definitely has a huge presence in the display cabinet.

A big of angst:
I mentioned above that the helmet is a nice glossy black. There have been many reports of scratches and scuff marks on the helmet, and on closer inspection, I found some pretty obvious scratches on mine under the LED lighting. Apart from scratches, many people also had the silver tips of the mouth piece broken off, which is a shame since it really tarnishes the first impressions of the figure.

But with the usual excellent Sideshow customer service, I was sent a replacement helmet immediately and received it a few days later. Unfortunately, even though it was better than the first helmet that I've got pictured here, there were still some scuff marks since the helmet was scratched by the clamshell plastic in which it was housed!

So Sideshow have indicated that they will send out another replacement, and hopefully that one will be perfect. The QC issues with the helmet have been widespread enough such that Sideshow have run out of their initial stock of replacement parts, and are waiting on a new shipment of replacements. So people should be getting their parts in the next couple of weeks.

SUMMARY:
Darth Vader is one of the most iconic villains ever to grace the silver screen, and Sideshow really have done the character justice with this Deluxe release. The likeness, both quality and quantity of accessories, and special touches like the lightup features, all combine to make this a must-have for most collectors. This package really shows that Sideshow are pushing themselves to keep up with Hot Toys at the forefront of 1/6th scale collectibles.

I highly recommend it! If you're still looking to get it, click the link here - Sideshow Darth Vader Deluxe - to go directly to the Sideshow website with all the details to order.
