Hot Toys MMS616 Marty McFly and MMS617 Doc Brown

My 1/6th scale collecting has slowed down considerably the past couple of years. This is mainly due to the lack of figures being released from source material that I grew up with. But luckily Hot Toys still seems to want to release some Back to the Future characters, with the BTTF3 Doc and Marty releases.

Click the link below for my video review over on the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel, and more pics if you scroll down further.

Hot Toys have done a pretty awesome job with these two, with some incredibly detailed clothing and accessories. Together they look like they jumped out of the screen into my display cabinet! I'm glad they didn't reuse Doc's head sculpt for a third time, and went with a more stoic look. Marty similarly gets a pretty straight face. I would've like more of an expression, but at least the paint application brings out the nice details and glassiness in the eyes.

Doc comes with several different layers of clothing, and two outer jackets. You can go for the look from the dance, or the early scene where he saves Marty from the hanging. I prefer that older style with the tan long coat, and it fits beautifully on the figure.

I love the little details with the watch and chain that hangs nicely in the inner coat. The material used is fantastic for each different piece of clothing, giving a real sense of authenticity to the movie. It's unfortunate that the hat is not removeable, and is only plastic, but it's a minor negative in amongst some awesome 1/6th scale tailoring.

Marty is pretty great too, and also comes with his poncho that he wears for most of the movie. But I actually prefer the traditional cowboy style that he had just before the duel. The gun strap was a pain to get sitting right arcross the waist, especially trying to get that angled look. But once set up, he looks very natural.

Again the material in the clothing is outstanding, and lays very well on the body. If you put the poncho on, you need to put some effort into getting it to lay close to the body as it does tend to balloon out which does not look natural.

I'm glad that Hot Toys decided to complete the figures from all three movies. I'm glad to finally have all three versions displayed in the collection. Across the board, I think Hot Toys have done a pretty awesome job with Marty.

They did pretty well with Doc too, although the reuse of the same head sculpt in the first two version is still disappointing. But I love the outfits that are so iconic, and the accessories just add that nice touch to the display too.

Hot Toys doesn't seem to do too many figures from classic 80s action or sci-fi anymore, but here's hoping they do more from that era.

Hot Toys MMS610 Doc Brown from Back to the Future

Ever since Hot Toys announced the Back to the Future licence, and released the Delorean as well as two versions of Marty McFly from the first movie, collectors have desperately wanted a Doc Brown from that original movie in his radiation suit.

It's taken far too long, but Hot Toys have finally released Doc in his iconic suit, with a couple of disappointing aspects to the set. Click through below to check out my full video review on the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel!

The set comes well stocked with accessories. This being the Deluxe version, it also comes with the plutonium case and removable tube of plutonium. The case itself looks quite nice, but it is actually mostly made out of cardboard instead of molded plastic. So that is the first of the disappointments.

Luckily the other accessories in the core set are actually very nicely done. I love the array of tools and the tool pouch. The Delorean remote control is very detailed, but be careful of the antenna since it's quite fragile.

It takes a bit of fiddling around to get all the accessories onto the figure in a natural looking way. I went back to the source material in the carpark scene to get most of my references. I prefer to have the utility belt slanting to one side to give the illusion of weight in the tool pouch. Once everything is added to his suit, overall I think it looks fantastic.

The biggest disappointment with the set is of course the head sculpt. It is a re-used sculpt from the first Back to the Future Part 2 figure, so Hot Toys took the lazy way out. This is especially obvious when you notice the small holes near his ears that were intended for the sunglasses on the BTTF2 figure that should've been covered up for this figure.

In the end though, the overall figure is still great to have in the collection. The suit, decked out with all the accessories, does look fantastic. The suit has a lot of play to it, and may appear too baggy. But if you futz it right with the accessories, it can look very close to the movie scene. It's a nice touch that they included his tshirt and green Hawaiian shirt underneath the radiation suit to be very movie accurate.

The set also comes with the stop watch for Einstein, so if you have the 2nd release of Marty and Einstein, you can make good use of that accessory. Together with either Marty figure, Doc looks great. Now that I have the pair from the original movie as well as Part 2, I'm really looking forward to closing out the BTTF collection when the Part 3 figures release later in 2023.

Since I have the original release of the Hot Toys Marty McFly, I thought I could pass on the more recent release with Einstein. But since they also announced the Doc Brown in his radiation suit, and included Einstein with this release, I just couldn't resist.

Click the link below to watch my full video review over on the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel. I do a comparison with the previous release, and there is a suprising number of differences. There are pros and cons both ways, but I think fans who missed out on the original will be pretty happy with this release.

Packaging comes with a decent array of accessories, many of which are from the original release. Major accessory missing from that original release are the sunglasses, as well as the guitar. But I think they pretty much included everything else.

As shown in my video review, there are some slight differences in the backpack as well. But the main differences really come through when looking at the figure's outfit.

The material used for this release has a finer texture to it, and I think it makes the figure look more refined. The original outfit has a denim texture that is perhaps a bit too coarse in this 1/6th scale. It still looks pretty nice, and some of the stitching I prefer. But the finer texture in the jeans and denim jacket look maybe a tad more realistic here.

The head sculpt itself is another obvious difference with the original figure. The expression is similar, and the hair on this new release doesn't ride so high. But I think the hair is a little too flat in its paint app, missing the highlights that would avoid making it look like a chunk of brown plastic.

The skin texture is also a different shade to the original figure, and is more realistic too. Overall, displayed with Einstein and the camcorder, it does look like a great representation of the scene from the carpark in Back to the Future.

I can't wait to see how Radiation Suit Doc Brown turns out, as well as the BTTF3 versions of Doc and Marty too. I'm glad that Hot Toys is still interested in making variants from those movies to give fans something a bit different from the usual Marvel and Star Wars fare.

Hot Toys MMS380 Doc Brown from Back to the Future Part 2

I got the new Hot Toys Marty McFly recently from Back to the Future Part 2, so it's good that they released the Doc Brown to complement Marty pretty soon after. This is unlike the original Marty release that still does not have a radiation suit Doc to display with him.

That aside, this new Doc Brown figure is still pretty nicely done by Hot Toys. Click through below to watch my full video review over on the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel! Make sure to subscribe and to give the video a like too :)

The set comes with a nice array of accessories, showcasing some of Hot Toys' attention to detail! The love the newspaper that the "before" paper to the newspaper that came with Marty showing the "after" paper with the altered history.

The case of emergency money is also nicely done, this time with little stickers that you apply to the case cover and for each money slot. Takes a bit of fiddling to get the stickers on, but gives it a nice unique touch to it.

The exclusive walkie-talkies are nice, and can be removed, but I'll keep them in their slip case. The set is rounded out with a couple of watches, the hynoptic device, his visor and binoculars, and various hands.

Of couse the most controversial part of the figure is the head sculpt. I think the likeness is OK, and the expression is really helped by the usual high quality Hot Toys facial paint app. The realism is nice, although the skin texture is a little too smooth. A few more wrinkles will add some age to the head sculpt for a bit more screen accuracy.

The use of the visor enhances the likeness too, but I went with the pose with him lifting them and looking at his watch. That sort of pose suits the facial expression the most I think.

The costuming is the usual high quality again, with various layers and details. The coat is nicely tailored, with a wire along the edge for poseability. I do think the coat and the pants are too yellow though. He comes across a bit too much like a canary, whereas in the movie the coat and pants were more of a dirty orange colour I think.

But still, the details in the red shirt, the socks, and especially the boots is very impression. I initially thought the boots had real laces, but they are simply molded laces well painted in red. The articulation is pretty good in the boots too, so that helps with some of the wide stances.

Together with the Marty figures and the Delorean, the Doc Brown figure looks fantastic. I really hope Hot Toys announces a radiation suit Doc from the first movie, as that's pretty much the only other figure I'd love to have in the collection!

Hot Toys MMS379 Marty McFly from Back to the Future Part 2

It's taken a while for Hot Toys to release their Back to the Future Part 2 figures, but now Marty is here and Doc has just been recently released in HK. Click through below to watch my full video review over on the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel!

The set comes with a decent array of accessories, but I really do hate the large dynamic stand. I wish Hot Toys would also include the old black oval bases that they used to. Those do the job well and still look classy. This dynamic stand will probably be my 4th or 5th one that I've just stored away in a drawer never to be used!

The exclusive version I got from Sideshow includes a couple of extra hands to go with the gun from the Wild Gunman arcade game. Not really an essential exclusive accessory, so if you're only getting the regular version you're not really missing out on too much.

I do like the other accessories including the swap out hair and cap, Pepsi bottle, hoverboard, almanac and bag, and newspaper. The shoe container is also not bad, but pretty pointless when he's wearing the shoes lol. It's a shame none of the accessories have their official brand logos, such as Nike and Mattel. This is similar to the first Marty McFly figure, so I'm sure the custom decal makers will have a good run of orders.

The head sculpt I think is a slight improvement in likeness over the first figure. But it's strange in that the first head sculpt seems to work better with poses from that movie. The expression Hot Toys have chosen for this version is far too serious and sombre, particularly when posed on the hoverboard! Something more determined or action-oriented would've been far better.

The jacket is nicely tailored, although I did have some trouble getting it to sit symmetrically on both sides of the neck. I also worry about the sleeves due to their rubber/vinyl type material that could degrade over time. The jeans were also a tad too short I think, but overall the outfit is decent and does the job well for this iconic costume from Part 2.

I couldn't quite get the figure to sit on the hood of the Delorean properly, so gave up and just have him standing there now. Will have to trawl the figure forums and groups for more inspiration on a long-term pose.

Overall, I think the figure is nicely made, and will look great next to the upcoming Doc Brown too. I do wish they announce a radiation Doc to go with the first Marty though. Either way, if you're a BTTF fan, I'm sure you'll be pretty happy with this figure.

Hot Toys MMS260 Back to the Future Delorean Time Machine

Wow, it certainly feels like a long wait for this amazing collectible to finally arrive! I preordered this on day one at local retailer Popcultcha Supastore, and am so glad it all arrived in pretty awesome condition.

Here's my quick video review of the car, some of the incredible detail, and light up features.

Box was definitely a big one! Will end up having to use it to store other figure boxes though lol!!

There's a bit of minor assembly at the start, with the front bumper and side panels needing to be attached. That's where a had an issue with the front bumper side coming a little unglued when I tried to attach the wires on the front edge. Luckily nothing actually broke, just the factory glue on that little piece wasn't strong enough. But a bit of glue on my part was enough to give it enough strength to hold the wire in and all is good!

The detailing along the rear is where the car shines, with all sorts of wires, molded parts, weathered paint apps etc to give it a nice sense of realism. The only major downer for me is that they went with a goddamn sticker for the number plate!! How Hot Toys came to that decision for an iconic car like this in this size and price range will forever be a mystery. It should have been at least a molded plastic license plate!! Luckily it still looks OK with the sticker in place.

Some stickers are also needed inside the car, which were a bit of a pain to get in. You will definitely need some tweezers to get them straight. They do give spares, which was good since I needed one! For the exterior, it's all plastic I think, but the brushed aluminium look to the paint app gives it a nice metallic finish.

The light-up feature is pretty neat, with the battery compartment under the hood. With the switch on, the headlights, side lights, flux capacitor and other internal lights, and rear lights all come one. The flashing flux capacitor is definitely a nice touch!

I love that the doors are magnetic and rotate on ratchet joints. With rotating and steerable rubber wheels too, the car looks great. It's a shame that more lighting couldn't be done on the internal panel of the car, especially the date readouts.

But in the end, with the Marty McFly figure stepping out of the car, the whole setup just looks amazing. I absolutely love it, and it will be an essential part of my collection forever! Highly recommended for Back to the Future fans for sure!

Hot Toys MMS257 Back to the Future Marty McFly

As most of you know, I grew up in the 80s, so have a love of most things classic action / sci-fi that came out of that awesome decade. Back to the Future ranks right up there with my favourite movies, and so it was a given that I would get the figure as soon as Hot Toys announced their 1/6th scale Marty McFly and Delorean collectibles.

Marty went up for preorder at Sideshow Collectibles in late July 2014 (click the link here for the order details!), so it's been a long wait for its final release. But I can wholeheartedly say that it was well worth the wait, and Hot Toys have really done this iconic character justice!

Click through below for my full video review over on the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel. More pics and my thoughts further below too :)

The packaging is pretty simple, going back to the basic shoe box style and cardboard insert of previous figures. I like the simplicity and the classic BTTF logo and fiery Delorean tracks into the distance really makes me look forward to early next year when the Delorean is released!

Since I ordered the exclusive version from Sideshow, it comes with the additional guitar from the audition scene in the movie. There was a lot of discussion on the accuracy of the guitar to the actual model used in the movie. I'm not that hardcore a guitar fan to really know the difference, so it doesn't really mean too much to me. I just think it's a cool additional extra for them to have thrown in lol!!

Regardless of whether you got the exclusive or just the regular, there are a heap of accessories anyway. I just wish Hot Toys provided so much with all of their figures in this price range!

It comes with a nicely sculpted and painted skateboard, very nicely detailed and padded backpack, the walkman and headphones, camcorder, sunglasses, calculator wrist watch, and the array of hands. And that's all in addition to the amazing layered costume and figure itself!

The costume has been really nicely tailored, and nothing feels overly big or too tight. There are a number of layers to the costume, with the red outer jacket, inner denim jacket, his checkered shirt, and then the red t-shirt underneath!

The red jacket is the most delicate, with the silver and black buttons being only glued on with the tiniest amount of glue. Any sort of pressure on them will dislodge them, so be VERY careful! They do provide spares, but losing them will be very easy if you don't immediately see them when they fall off.

But other than that, the outfit is awesome with a lot of detail. The denim material used is very nice and doesn't feel too delicate. The subtle weathering on the jeans is especially well done.

The shoes are also nicely sculpted, albeit without the classic Nike logo. I guess they didn't want to go the extra mile and obtain the Nike license, but overall I'm OK with that. There are lots of customisers out there selling decals that can be stuck on the shoes, and also the manufacturer logos on the camcorder and walkman.

The head sculpt and facial paint app are again the very high Hot Toys standard (if only Sideshow figures could match that paint app and skin texture on their head sculpts!). The only nitpick would be that the head sculpt really only applies to some poses, such as the one where he's taking off the sunnies to look at his watch.

Talking about poses, the articulation overall is great, except in the shoulder areas where care was needed for mine. The shoulders could easily be moved out to the sides, but trying to rotate them forward was difficult. I was actually afraid that I was going to snap something.

In the end, it seemed the clothing underneath might have been restricting the movement. After a bit of futzing and slow movement and adjustment of the clothes, the shoulders could be rotated forward. So at least I could achieve the pose I really wanted, shown above and below. Now all I need is for the Delorean to release so I can have his right foot inside the car! Oh, and a Doc Brown would just top it off even more :)

All in all, if you're a fan of the movie, then this is a must-have figure! The attention to detail in most parts of the figure is excellent, the accessories are numerous and perfect for many scenes in the movie, and the head sculpt is great and instantly recognisable. Highly recommended!!
