Pix Brix Street Fighter 2 puzzle sets

I stumbled across these Pix Brix sets over on the Big Bad Toy Store website. I'm a big Street Fighter fan since growing up playing the original Street Fighter 2 back in the days of actual arcade centres. These sets really spoke to my nostalgia of many things 80s and 90s. Being a brick building fan of Lego, these were pretty much a must-have for me!

Now the Pix Brix design of each individual piece is quite different to Lego, despite the very similar aesthetic on the packaging art! The build styles and technique are quite different too. You may get a better feel for this in some of the close up shots in my video reviews below over on the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel. Hope you can check them out, and scroll down further for more pics of the completed set.

It's great that each set comes with a character sheet with some decent artwork and character biography. The colour map to build each set is on the reverse side of each character sheet. I didn't recognise some of the artwork, but by all accounts they are orginal character art from the game.

Each set is 768 pieces, being 24 x 32 bricks in dimensions, taking the complete set to over 6000 pieces. At about USD$21 each, the price to piece count to pretty decent. Once completed and put together, the full size of the set really becomes apparent, and it simply looks fantastic.

Since they are brick built, the character portraits do look better when viewed from a small distance. But that's perfect for placing them on a book shelf, gaming desk, or in your display cabinet. I'm very much out of space these days, but will definitely need to find a spot to display this set.

For a bit more of a size comparison, here is the completed set with me on the couch! This set is perfect for Street Fighter fans, particularly those with fond memories of the original arcade game and core cast of characters. Highly recommended!

PCS 1/3 scale Street Fighter Cammy

I've loved playing Street Fighter ever since the early 90s in the good old arcade days. The Pop Culture Shock, now known as Premium Collectibles Studio or simply PCS, statues in their 1/4 scale have been well known and sought after pieces for many years. When their 1/3 scale series was launched, I just had to have some of my favourite characters in that scale.

I have the previous Ryu and Chun-Li statues in this series in their classic outfits. So when Cammy was announced, also with her classic outfit, there was no way I was going to pass on that! Her classic outfit is perhaps one of the most iconic in Street Fighter history!

Click through the link below to watch my video review of Cammy over on the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel. Hope you can also give the video a thumbs up, and subscribe too for more video reviews coming soon.

The box is the typical 1/3 scale size, with some great photography of the classic version with a couple of shots of the two other variants. Those lucky enough to get all three will have a fantastic series of statues showing the key evolutionary changes to her outfits in various Street Fighter games.

Unboxing these large scale statues is always a great experience, and Cammy was no exception. For the most part, I was simply glad that the key areas of the sculpt around the face, legs, and arms was mostly OK. There were a few minor scratches in the paint work where the light catches an angle and highlights areas of the paint that don't have that nice matte finish. But they're hard to see from most angles so it didn't bother me enough to ask for a replacement.

The other key area of concern for me was the fabric outfit. Luckily the stitching on mine was pretty much perfect. I had seen some others where the stitching had already frayed or come loose, which looks very untidy on a figure like this, so I was glad mine was OK. The material is not to delicate that touching it causes runs or tears, and mine was mostly OK with only a tiny run near the back shoulder that is not very visible. So I was OK to keep this particular piece and not run the risk of getting a replacement that is worse!

The classic outfit looks fantastic on display, and her bright colour definitely gives her a lot of shelf presense. Adjusting the fabric on her neck to securely fit over the head sculpt is a bit fiddly, but it certainly looks better that way than just placing her head on the joint with the fabric tucked underneath.

The fiddliest part of the assembly process did not turn out to be her ponytails, but the two small pieces for her fringe! I had to dip them in very hot water to soften the tip just slightly, which allowed for a better fit into the tiny slots in her forehead. I was glad that I was able to get them in properly without snapping anything.

Here's a bit of a cheeky shot of the new Lego Hubble Space telescope catching images of a new moon! 😁

Once all setup, she scales beautifully with the previous Ryu and Chun-Li. They looks absolutely fantastic displayed together. After playing these characters for so many years in the arcades, and then again more recently in Street Fighter 4, these statues certainly bring out the nostalgia each time I see them.

I'm slowing setting up the home theatre room now, and have found a spot for these three large statues behind my couch. They'll watch guard over us as we watch the latest 4k movies! Now all I need is for PCS to make a 1/3 scale Ken in his classic red gi outfit and I'll be set! Here's hoping they make that announcement soon!

Pop Culture Shock 1/3 scale Chun-Li statue

I love Street Fighter, and have been playing since high school back in the 1990s. My favourite character is Ryu, and I have the previously released 1/3 scale Ryu statue from Pop Culture Shock (PCS). When I saw the prototype for the new Chun-Li, I knew I had to have this classic rendition of her too!

Click through below to check out my full video review on the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel. Hope you can give the video a thumbsup and subscribe too! 😃

When a statue of this size and presence arrives in the post, it's always a great day. My smile couldn't get much bigger could it? 😄

After setting her up, she absolutely looks amazing. The level of sculpting detail is pretty good, and the material used for the mixed media is great too. The stockings look nice, and I'm glad they moved the seam from the outside of the legs to the inside. It's mostly hidden, but from some angles you can still see some unsightly stitching. Luckily it's not that noticeable from most angles.

The qipao has a nice material, but I wish some of the gold stitching was done with more attention to symmetry. From the front it looks OK, but some of the stitchning along her back is noticeably off centre. The front gold stitching fares a bit better.

Placing the wrist bracelets and hands was a little tricky, especially on the left hand to get it sitting close to her chest. But just make sure the bracelets sit low enough on the arms to allow the hands and their magnets to connect properly and it'll be fine.

The paint application on the visible skin is a little flat. I was expecting to see more skin texture and freckling like they did with the Ryu. That sort of detail always adds to the realism, especially at this scale. The lack of much skin texture and shading is a little disappointing, but from regular viewing distances it holds up OK.

Now on to some of the more annoying QC issues that have resulted in me asking for a replacement head sculpt. The issues I have with my statue are:

1) The red satin material used to wrap parts of the statue actually rubbed off red colour onto white painted parts of the statue. This included the hair buns and it was worst on the right shoe. The red cannot be wiped off with water.

2) The bridge of her nose has a strange small patch that is a lighter shade than the surrounding skin colour. It's like the top layer of paint was removed from that small area.

3) The sculpt along her underwear near the stocking seam has a crack. This is luckily hidden when the back of the skirt is in the normal down position.

It's the red stains on her hair buns and that light patch on her nose that mar an otherwise great sculpt. I've contacted the retailer, so will hopefully find out soon if I can get an exchange on the head sculpt. I really hope PCS learn from this and use a white satin material instead of red!

In the end, it's a fantastic statue that I love in the collection. Once an unblemished head sculpt arrives, she'll be damn near perfect!

Bandai S.H.Figuarts Street Fighter Ken and Sakura

I love Street Fighter, and these Bandai S.H.Figuarts figures have scratched the itch to have some smaller figures to pose up. The overall quality has been great, and the recent releases of Ken and Sakura are no different.

Click through below to watch my full review of both warriors over on the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel. Make sure to give the video a like and also subscribe to the channel :)

As you'd expect, Ken is a very similar figure to Ryu and Akuma. The range of articulation is essentially identical, and the sculpted details are nice. I'm not that big a fan of the head sculpts, but this smirking one I used in the photo below is my favourite.

The skin tone on the face is a lighter shade than the body, which is really my only other complaint about the figure. The accessories are decemt, and he looks great posed with the others.

Sakura turned out to be a great figure! I especially love the way they designed the shoes so that the range of ankle articulation is not affected. The front and rear tops split as they normally would, giving a great range of motion.

The knees are nice like Chun-Li's, and not the terrible ones used on Cammy. I think the face sculpts are nice too, and I prefer the broad smiling one I used below. The paint app on the costume is sharp too, and the skirt design didn't hinder any movement.

Together, the gang looks pretty damn good so far. I just saw the other day that Blanka has now been shown at toy conventions, so a preorder for that should be soon. Hopefully we see other classic characters like Guile, E.Honda, and Zangief in this series too. If they're able to make the original cast from Street Fighter 2, I'd be very happy!

I've been playing around with some manual camera settings recently to get my photography skills up. These figures certainly made for great test subjects!

BigboystoysHK Street Fighter TNC-09 Vega

BigboystoysHK have done some great work with their Street Fighter series. I've got all the main characters from the series, and am glad that they're committed to completing the core characters from Street Fighter 2.

Their latest is now the first of the original boss characters with Vega. Again, they've designed the pose and light/sound features beautifully to capture that classic fighting move from the game. Click through below to watch my full video review over on the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel!

Packaging is the usual fantastic style, with great artwork on the front. They've had consistently awesome artwork with this super-deformed style, and the covers do indeed look fantastic displayed together.

There is a bit of assembly to put the statue together, and it does get fiddly this time. The wrists have little posts that fit into holes in the lightup base. Out of the box, the base is a little too wide, so you do need to stretch out the arms slightly and push the base ends together to get the wrist pegs to fit into the holes nicely.

Just go slow and you shouldn't snap or break anything. I'd suggest putting one arm in first slightly, and then squeeze to place the other arm in. Then push down to firmly place both arms in. Once all set up, the set looks fantastic!

The background is Vega's classic game stage, and the pose captures his flying attach move perfectly. The sculpting and paint app are the usual high standard. The face mask is also removable, and attaches via a magnet near the top of the forehead.

It fits pretty well, and his unmasked face looks suitably "pretty" for the character. I prefer the mask on look which befits his attack move. The sound effect is the clip when he perfects the move, and the lightup effect is nicely time-sequenced with the sound.

Overall, if you're a fan of the original Street Fighter 2 game, you will love these statue sets as much as I do. I still need to figure out how to display all the characters together, and they do look amazing all displayed with each other. I can't wait to see how they do Sagat, Balrog, and M.Bison to finish off the original bosses!

BigBoysToysHK Street Fighter TNC-06 Dhalsim

These Street Fighter sets from BigBoysToysHK just seem to get better and better! I've collected all the previous releases with Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, Guile, and Blanka (click the links to see the review of each!).

This new Dhalsim is another gorgeous addition to this series that is awesome for any old school Street Fighter fan! Click through below to check out my full review over on the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel :)

The packaging has the same beautiful, super-deformed artwork of the previous releases. Love the velcro front panel to reveal the statue through the window. The back of the box showcases the lighting and sounds effects which looks nice too.

If you've got any of the previous sets, you'll know what you're in for. It comes with the base that has the sound effects and electronics for the lighting too. The backdrop is straight from the character stage from the original Street Fighter 2 arcade game. The statue has some foot pegs that connect the electronics together and keep it stable on the base.

The sculpting is again beautifully designed. The musculature is great, and the paint app accentuates it all very nicely. The translucent plastic for the yoga flame works well with the electronics, giving a nice spinning effect to the flame. The sound effect is the classic "yoga flame" sound byte from the game.

The statue looks pretty damn good from all angles, that showcase the sculpt and paint app. Displayed with the others in the series, this makes for a nostalgic centrepiece in any Street Fighter collection! I can't wait to get the upcoming sets with Zangief, Akuma, and E.Honda now teased. Will definitely be getting all of these awesome world warriors! :)

BigBoysToys Street Fighter T.N.C-05 Blanka

I've loved the previous four Street Fighter sets in this awesome series by BigBoysToys. The super-deformed style of the sculpting and homages back to the original Street Fighter 2 arcade game make this a must-have for fans who stood for hours back in the day in the arcades!

Click the link below to watch my full review over on the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel.

The artwork is the same awesome style and quality of the previous 4 releases in Ryu, Ken, Chun-Li, and Guile. Love the design!

The extra pieces to attach to the electric storm are a little fiddly to get in place, but once all set up it's bloody awesome! Love the original sound effects from the game, and the lightup effect is very effective. The base, extra plastic pieces, Blanka's hair and eyes all light up nicely (see my video above that show's it).

The sculpting and paint app of the statue itself is every bit as nice as the previous releases. There's no bleeding in the paint app, and it really accentuates the molded detail in the pants and musculature.

Overall, this is one of their best releases in the line so far.  Really looking forward to Dhalsim and Akuma coming up next!

BigBoysToysHK Street Fighter The New Challenger TNC-04 Guile

If you follow the page and channel, you'll know that I love Street Fighter. And this statue set line from BigBoysToysHK is a fantastic series for Street Fighter fans. If you used to play Street Fighter 2 in the arcades back in the 90s, this line is made just for you!

The nostalgia I feel when I press that sound and light effect button is great, and all the statues in the series bring back so many memories!

For my full video review, click through below to the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel. More pics are further down :)

The packaging has the same styled artwork on the box, with the nice velcro opening flap.

Once all setup, the statue looks fantastic. As always, the mold and paint work is top-notch, with great details and little touches. I especially love the dog-tag around his neck.

I love that they include the pieces of the arcade game background that broke in-game, such as Guile's wooden crate here or the previous Ken's barrel. It's little touches like this that make this a great homage to the arcade game.

The sound and light effects are classic Guile too, with the original Street Fighter 2 sonic boom sound byte. The spinning light effect of the sonic boom itself is great. They actually changed the rotation direction based on an eagle-eyed fan that pointed out the prototype was actually spinning in the wrong direction! That's what you call great fan service!

Together with the others, the series just makes for an awesome Street Fighter display for fans of the old arcade game. The teaser for Blanka has been shown, and that looks amazing too. Can't wait to get the whole series when they continue releasing sets through 2017!

BigBoysToysHK TNC-03 Chun-Li

I'm a big Street Fighter fan, and loved the two previous releases in this line with Ryu and Ken. This new Chun-Li is every bit as good, and I love the sound and lightup effects!

Click through the link below to see my full review over on the Kool Kollectibles YouTube channel! Having these all together looks and sounds fantastic! :)

The box art is beautiful as always with this line!

The backdrop is the iconic Street Fighter 2 stage for Chun-Li. What would've taken it to the next level would've been the guy on the bicycle as a separate display piece like the barrel on Ken's stage! :)

Love that these things just look awesome from every angle!

The lightup effect that follows the sequence of her leg kick is just amazing. I just love mashing that button for the sounds and lights! :)

The paint and sculpting is again outstanding from BigBoysToysHK. They've really been doing a great job with these little statues in this super-deformed style.

Together with Ryu and Ken really show off how amazing these look. They have teased Guile as the next one out, and have promised to do the entire Street Fighter 2 World Warrior roster. Here's hoping that holds true and make this a Street Fighter collector line to remember!
